A rich historical heritage in Romans
Led by a guide, your group will discover the history and anecdotes of the city of Romans-sur-Isère through its medieval streets and Renaissance facades. Don't miss the "collégiale Saint-Barnard", whose origins date back to the 9th century, and the rare and magnificent interior courtyards of former town houses. For example, the "Hôtel Clérieux", one of the city's most beautiful jewels, is well known to the people of Romans.
The collegiate church of Saint-Barnard
Built of molasse, around which the town of Romans grew in the Middle Ages, the collegiate church of Saint-Barnard combines the Romanesque (lower part of the nave) and Gothic (upper part, choir and transept) eras. Your group can visit the church choir and marvel at the 14th-century murals, as well as the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, home to one of the jewels of the Romanesque heritage, the 16th-century embroidered hanging of the Mystery of the Passion. The large sacristy houses superb 18th-century walnut panelling and numerous objects of sacred art. The collegiate church has been a listed monument since 1840.
Shoes and Romans : a whole history!
Along the water and through the historic center, you'll learn all about the history of footwear in Romans. Its origins ? Leather, of course! From craftsmanship and industrialization to designers and luxury footwear, the whole town has been built around these skills. Great names such as Charles Jourdan, Stéphane Kélian and Robert Clergerie have given the city its letters of nobility. Between yesterday and today, the town of Romans is intimately linked to the world of footwear, earning it the title of “Shoe Capital”.
Walk along the water's edge, Martinette canal
This walking tour is all about the interesting industrial past of Romans and to explore the rural side of the town. "La Martinette" is a thousand-year-old canal that was dug out by the Benedictines, the founders of Saint-Barnard Abbey. The tour is not a loop, it ends on Rue Louis le Cardonnel at the bridge over the Savasse.
The Way of the Cross and the Calvary of the Récollets
Every Good Friday since the 16th century, a multitude of pilgrims have relived Christ's passion by following the 42 stations of the Romans-sur-Isère Way of the Cross in procession. The visit will enable your group to discover the chapels scattered around the city. Le Calvaire was founded by a wealthy Romans merchant in the 16th century, and the Calvary Mount, transformed into a cemetery in the 19th century, is the culmination of the Way of the Cross.
